The filming is being kept under close wraps, the production team have already set up camp at El Cuervo volcano in the Timanfaya National Park, which is closed to visitors during this time. The new series of Doctor Who returns to television this Autumn, Hermione Norris will guest star with The Doctor played by Peter Capaldi, the actress commented ‘It’s exciting to be part of such an iconic show, and one that my kids can watch!!!’
Steven Moffat, the lead writer and Executive Producer for the series, said ‘It’s a testament to the quality of Peter Harness’s intense and emotional script, that we’ve been able to attract an actress of the brilliance of Hermione Norris. And for the first time since 1984, the Doctor Who production team is heading to Lanzarote. The Doctor is returning to the scene of an old adventure – but there have been sinister changes since his last visit.’
The episode to be filmed in Lanzarote has been written by Peter Harness, produced by Peter Bennett and directed by Paul Wilmshurst. The episode also stars Ellis George, Tony Osoba and Phil Nice.
Doctor Who fans on the island will be delighted to hear the news, and it’s great publicity for Lanzarote having such a prestigious show filming here. It’s worrying news though for local campaigners who are working to protect the landscape and wildlife at El Cuervo. As we reported recently, the Barbary Falcons are nesting in that area and currently have chicks. Concern has been raised that there doesn’t appear to be any representation from Medio Ambiente to ensure that the landscape is protected and no further damage inflicted during the filming.
