Acclaimed BBC America series The Doctors Revisited is coming to UKTV subscription channel Watch as part of the Doctor Who 50th anniversary celebrations.

Hailed by many fans as one of the finest programmes about the show, the 11-part serial focuses an episode on each incarnation of the Time Lord. It has been airing in the US since January – with one instalment shown each month, followed by an adventure featuring the Doctor in question – and will culminate with Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor in November, when the show celebrates its 50th anniversary.

“It’s a series that’s been the envy of some Who fans and will be welcome by some who feel that aspects of the show’s past are being overlooked in its 50th year,” said one Doctor Who fan.

The Doctors Revisited will begin airing on Watch in the second week of October and complements a roster of tribute programmes on the BBC.

The centrepiece of course will be the 50th Anniversary Special episode The Day of the Doctor.

The 75-minute celebratory episode feature the return of classic Who monsters the Zygons, as well as Daleks, Cybermen and the Doctor’s allies UNIT.

Supporting programmes include a lecture by physicist Professor Brian Cox on the science behind the science fiction.

An Adventure In Space and Time, Mark Gatiss’s BBC4 drama about the inception of the show will also air, and will be bolstered by the four episodes of the first ever Doctor Who story, An Unearthly Child, in a newly restored version.

Meanwhile, BBC2’s The Culture Show is to present Me, You and Doctor Who in which fan Matthew Sweet explores the show’s cultural significance, while a 90-minute documentary on BBC Radio 2 will ask “Who Is The Doctor?”
