As a life-long lover of all things Luthier, as well as all things Whovian, I believe I just discovered exactly who I’m going to see when I am ready for my next guitar.
Our magnificent mate Craig Hurle, who runs the Doctor Who and the Tardis community page, pointed us toward this awesome homebrew The Doctor Who Tardis Guitar, aka the GuiTARdis, acoustic guitar that Lew crafted. I then spent a good hour drooling over it whilst imagining all the gigs I would crash throughout space and time… Hendrix at Monterey; Crosby, Stills & Nash at Woodstock; Queen at Live Aid; The Beatles at Shea Stadium…. what, with with the power of the TARDIS at my very fingertips.
I was please to find out that the acoustic GuiTARdis was actually not Lew’s first foray into Doctor Who Guitar modding.
“There are two in existence. The acoustic was my second guiTARdis, the converted SG was the first. The first was built and used [as an entry] for the ‘Where’s The Tardis?’ contest for BBC America. The second was done in about a week before MegaCon 2012 in Orlando.”
Lew created the first GuiTARdis using the body of a Gibson Epiphone SG model 310. Guitar fans would recognize the SG as the guitar most notably used by Angus Young of AC/DC, yet after all the modifications — a new bridge and tail piece, new tuning heads and nut, a bunch of custom wood additions, and a sweet paint job — all traces of the SG are gone and the GuiTARdis is born. The second GuiTARdis was converted from a Yamaha acoustic guitar.
